What is Periodontal Disease, and How Can I Prevent It?
Periodontal disease affects dogs and cats similar to how it affects humans. Without consistent brushing, plaque and tartar will form on your pet’s teeth and, over time, release infectious bacteria into their mouth. This bacteria causes painful inflammation of the gums and may start to destroy gum tissue and some of the tooth roots.
The best way to prevent periodontal disease in your pet is to:
- Brush their teeth at least once a day (if possible)
- Schedule annual health checkups with your vet (this includes a dental checkup)
- Schedule a teeth cleaning (when your vet recommends it) to remove any buildup on the teeth that can’t be removed with brushing
- Incorporate additional treatment options into your pet’s care, including a dental diet, dental chews and treats, etc.
How We Clean Your Pet’s Teeth
In order to be done safely and thoroughly, cat and dog teeth cleaning procedures must be performed while the patient is under anesthesia. To ensure that the anesthetic will be safe for your pet, we’ll first do blood work to check their organ function.
When cleaning your pet’s teeth, we:
- First conduct a thorough exam of the entire mouth, checking for periodontal pockets and looking for loose or broken teeth
- To clean, we use a combination of hand scaling and ultrasonic scaling tools to carefully scrape away plaque and tartar, both above and below your pet’s gum line
- If your pet has periodontal disease, we can administer the appropriate antibiotics to treat the infection, but the extent of their treatment will depend on the extent of their condition
- Rinse the mouth to remove any debris from the cleaning
If necessary, we can also perform tooth extractions. We only extract teeth if they are loose, broken, and/or decayed, and making your pet uncomfortable. Our team will notify you and request permission to do an extraction if we think it's necessary, and we will provide the appropriate pain management to ease your pet's recovery.
